Writer, photographer, picture editor & researcher

Central to all my books is the pleasure of combining words and images, so that each complements and confirms the other. This is why I was a freelance picture researcher, and is why the Edifice photo library was formed. A common thread in much of my work is a preoccupation with the social history of how people create and inhabit their houses, gardens and environment. Early training in the history of decorative art has also left its indelible mark: I have a passion for all sorts of architectural and decorative detail, patterns, forms and shapes.
