EDIFICE, an archive of 35 mm colour photographs, was founded with Gillian Darley in the late 1980s shortly after the publication of Dictionary of Ornament. We had taken the photographs for this and it was interesting to continue in the same vein as a small specialist stock library concentrating on different building types, materials and architectural detail. We consistently photographed the ordinary as well as the spectacular.
In May 2015 the UK images were acquired by the Historic England Archive. To contact the Archive please click here.
Details, A Guide to House Design in Britain (Prestel, 2003) and House, British Domestic Architecture (Prestel, 2011) were both compiled by Philippa Lewis from the Edifice collection.
The Freedoms of Suburbia by Paul Barker (Frances Lincoln, 2009) is illustrated with photographs specially commissioned from Edifice/Philippa Lewis
